Retail Updates Portland Area

Portland Updates

The Portland Area Meat, Grocery, and CCK contracts expire July 26, 2008.  It was UFCW Local 555's goal to be at the bargaining table before the expirations of these contracts but because of the nearly year long struggle in Eugene / Springfield that was not possible.

The situation across the country is tough.  Many people are struggling.  The cost of food, health care, and necessities continue to rise (not to mention the cost of gas just to get to work.)  These issues require attention and UFCW Local 555 is devoted to fighting for the membership to ensure they are taken care of.  Please follow these negotiations.  Pass the information along and support each other.

Portland Members Accept Offer

With a higher than normal % of member participation for the West Coast, Portland members overwhelmingly accepted the 2 1/2 year contract., covering CCK, Meat and Grocery.  Copies of the tentative agreement will be available at the Union Office or through your Union Representative.

Bargaining Continues

After three days of bargaining for Portland and Bend grocery, meat & CCK members at Albertsons, Fred Meyer and Safeway, bargaining has been extended to continue to work through key issue on the bargaining table. We will continue to provide updates as they become available on the hotline, website and via text message.

Bah Humbug!

Your UFCW 555 Portland/Bend Bargaining Committee met for two days of negotiations on December 15 & 16 with the grocery employers.  While both sides exchanged proposals, no real progress was made as the employers continued to propose inadequate funding for your health care plan, and insist on a mix of bonuses and minimal pay increases for the wage package. Management's proposals continue to amount to significant paycuts for UFCW 555 members at Fred Meyer, Safeway and Albertsons.

The committee was assisted by UFCW Vice-President and Region 8 Director Shaun Barclay, who took the employers to task for the companies' weak insurance proposal.  The bargaining committee restated their demands for real wage increases and proper funding for both the health insurance and retirement packages.

Next negotiations are set for January 11, 12 & 13.

Now is the time to send a strong message to management and join with thousands of your Portland area coworkers that have signed the petition urging management to settle a contract with living wages, affordable healthcare and a secure retirement.

UFCW Local 555 is the largest private sector union in the state of Oregon representing 19,000 workers throughout Oregon and Southwest Washington.
