Bimbo Bakeries (Oroweat) Ratification

Following marathon negotiations on December 17th between UFCW Local 555 and Bimbo Bakeries USA, the union negotiating committee reached a fully-recommended settlement with the company.

Highlights of the proposed contract offer included a 60% reduction in monthly out-of-pocket health insurance premiums, the addition of stepchildren, stepparents, and grandchildren covered by funeral leave, political dues checkoff, wage increases amounting to 75 cents over the four years of the contract and protection against increased medical costs for union members and their families during the life of the agreement.
Bargaining unit members were ably represented by committee members Robin Brown (Albany) and Cindy Huffman (Beaverton) and chief negotiator, Brad Witt.

“Cindy and Robin are to be congratulated for their enormous contributions in obtaining the fully-recommended settlement,” said Witt. “They alone deserve credit for our Oroweat members getting wage increases in all four years of the contract . No question about it,” he emphasized, “those two ladies brought home the bacon for their co-workers.”

The settlement offer was overwhelmingly approved by a vote of the membership during a ratification meeting held on Tuesday night, January 19th at Local 555 headquarters in Tigard.

Unity Exemplified

UFCW Local 555 members led by President Dan Clay and Secretary-Treasurer Jeff Anderson were joined by UFCW Local 21 members, community activist, and concerned customers in The Dalles, Oregon on Saturday, August 14, 2010 to send Fred Meyer a single message - “Shame on you Fred Meyer! The Dalles non-food workers have been fighting for 1003 days to get what every other UFCW Local 555 represented non-food worker has in the states of Oregon and Washington... a secure union pension, a living wage, and a union health plan!”

The message to the members in the store was one of solidarity and support. We will continue to take any and all necessary steps to settle a fair contract. The Dalles members have a right to expect a secure retirement rather than gamble on employer provided 401(k), and the right to affordable family healthcare!

Attempts Of Distraction?

Fred Meyer has attached another notice to employee paychecks, this time in Coos Bay. We find some of the information contained within to be very interesting. First, Fred Meyer continues to claim that they are the only unionized non-food employer in Oregon.

We ask, What about Coos Grange? They are union and members there earn up to $12.51 /hr on a union scale. Maybe Fred Meyer doesn’t think they count.

Fred Meyer apparently believes that a mere 50 cents over 4 years is fair... Let’s see, if we do the math that works out to be a little more than a penny a month. We believe you are worth more!

Fred Meyer wrote “Please encourage the union to come back to the table to bargain with us reasonably.” We don’t think a penny a month is reasonable when you are already behind places like Newberg, Longview, and, of course, Portland!

For more than a year our bargaining team from Albany, Corvallis, and Salem have been pushing Fred Meyer/Kroger at the bargaining table to secure a better future.

  • We are taking the first steps to closing the wage gap between Salem-area and Portland
  • We have strengthened our bargaining power by including over 40 members from around the state
  • Faith and Labor Leaders are rallying behind their local Fred Meyer workers as we fight for a fair contract

Now is the time to stay together and stay strong. Albany, Corvallis, and Salem can achieve the most when we are UNITED!!!!!

UFCW Local 555 non-food members across the jurisdiction have ratified new agreements. This marked the first time in history that our union has brought a unified team to the bargaining table. Everyone should be proud of the work and commitment of the committee.

Sticking together and staying united worked! We are so proud of our work to secure a better future for our co-workers and ourselves. We were able to achieve many of the goals.
